Topper: An Ex-Racer Getting a Second Chance at Life
Topper: An Ex-Racer Getting a Second Chance at Life
Andrea Slifka (Geneva, IL) and her family rescued Topper from Midwest Greyhound Rescue in Sugar Grove in July of 2009. After breaking his leg he stayed at the rescue during the time it was healing. After that he was in a foster home until they adopted him. Altogether, he maybe spent about 6 months off the track at the rescue/in a foster home before his adoption. He was 2 1/2 when he was rescued and now he is 10 1/2. He raced in Iowa and Wisconsin and retired because he broke his back right leg during a race.
The Slifkas chose to adopt a greyhound because Mr. Slifka had a greyhound when he was younger and he had always wanted another one. The need for greyhounds to be adopted is at a high right now because racing tracks are being closed across the country due to the poor levels of treatment the dogs are receiving.
Topper was not always Topper. His racing name was KB's Top Hat. The Slifkas were told they could change his name to whatever they wanted but that it would be easier for him if it was something that sounded familiar to him and that is how they came up with the adorable name of Topper.
Top's favorite activities include going on long walks, going on car rides (he LOVES the car and will lay in the backseat for hours upon hours if need be), laying in the sun, and resting on any couch or bed he can find. He is an extremely gentle and friendly dog. While he can run extremely fast, he has no desire to since Andrea and her family have adopted him. He's a huge couch potato and enjoys his well deserved rest
